HOW TO TURN FLOSSING INTO A HABIT

HOW TO TURN FLOSSING INTO A HABIT

Floss is a thread like material that can be covered by a coating of teflon or wax making it easier to slide between the teeth. They are sometime infused with an antibacterial agent such as Chloroxehidine Gluconate to remove the harmful bacteria present beneath our gums.
Most people are aware how essential flossing is in maintaining our oral health and preventing disease. But to start a new habit is especially difficult if it is technique sensitive. How do we overcome this obstacle and turn flossing into a daily habit?
Remember that it takes only about three weeks to develop any habit. So take your first step towards flossing and you will surely find it easy to maintain healthy gums for a long time.
Flossing The Correct Way
1.      Take 10-12 inches of length of floss.
2.      Secure the floss around the middle fingers and make sure to leave around six inches of length in between.
3.      You should use thumbs for cleaning upper teeth and index fingers for lower teeth.
4.      Gently insert the floss in between the teeth and wrap the floss in a “C” shape around each teeth.
5.      Wipe the floss in an up and down motion and do not use a back and forth action. Start with upper then finish lower arch, between every space in the whole mouth.
Note:
It’s believed that humans take 21 days to get in or out of a habit. Therefore we simplified the flossing technique for you to get started with it and feel the difference it makes to your oral hygiene.
Here Are Some Tips To Help You:
1.     Try To Multitask.
If you have a busy schedule and you don’t get time to floss then you can add some hands-free activity while doing floss like watching TV, talking over a phone etc. Now you are involving flossing in your daily routine and keeping the teeth healthy too.
2.     Set A Visual Reminder
Put your floss nearby your night stand or next to your toothbrush. Keep a spool of floss everywhere which can remind you to floss. Seeing the floss will provide you the remembrance and will act as a good reminder for you.
3.     Attach The Habit To An Existing One.
Try to convince yourself that your brushing isn’t complete without flossing. It’s not two different procedures, its one. Gradually you will join the habits together according to your memory, you won’t forget to floss after brushing.
THERE IS A REASON
Ø Why You Don't Floss
Teeth too close together can’t set routine, big hands, ran out of floss, my dog ate my floss, the excuses are endless. When you are afraid to floss, you will find numerous excuses to escape from it.
Ø Why You Should Floss
Floss is like a workout for gums. The more you do flossing the healthier and firmer your gums will be. The healthy gums are necessary to keep your teeth firm in the bone and keep a healthy environment in the mouth.
POINTS TO PONDER
·         Generally people think the important thing is to move the floss through teeth, but in fact, floss can be destructive if you're not careful with it.
·         Floss is very thin, and you can damage the delicate tissues of gums with it. People should slide the floss through the contact point, not snap it through, as it will lacerate the gum tissue.
·         Gently bring the floss toward the base of the tooth, and then pull it against the tooth, and bring it away from the tooth's base.
·         This way you can scrape the plaque off the tooth surface. Evidence suggests that flossing along with brushing teeth is likely to help you form a habit.
·         Flossing not only protects your gums from the infection but also guides the way your immune system responds/reacts, your inflammatory reaction depending upon the health of your gums.
·         To sum it up, maintain a healthy lifestyle and good oral hygiene to protect your teeth and gums from unlikely damage and untimely falling off from dental caries.

Cancer now spelled with ‘S’

Cancer now spelled with ‘S’
Studies suggest that approximately 44% men and 39% women are susceptible to develop Cancer in their lifetime which is Scary news! Now studies have been conducted all over the world which provides some statistics which shows that there are some definitive conclusions which can e related to cause cancer. There are number of risk which we will discuss to create awareness about the ‘Dreaded’ cancer to help people to get clear perspective about it.
  1. SMOKING
The biggest factor in today’s time which is considered life threatening is Smoking! It is a risk factor for Lung cancer, Cancer of mouth, throat, tongue, palate etc. It has become a status symbol to smoke and considered being cool, many of which are passively exposed by their spouses and relatives which puts them at risk of danger too. Smoking should be banned at home and office etc places to avoid other people from the risk of developing heart conditions
CHEW-ABLE TOBACCO
The tobacco people chew and doesn’t causes smoke is very prevalent in Asian countries like India which is no good than smoking and causing precancerous lesions and conditions before converting into cancer. It is equally harmful as smoking.

 Avoid Alcohol

Spirits generally include Whisky and brandy. But the new studies show that drinking one or two of the spirits or beer can increase the risk of a woman to have breast cancer. Consider to avoid alcohol or if that’s not possible then or if you find that difficult, try and reduce the intake slowly and gradually
OH! THE SUN
The actinic radiation in sunlight is considered to causes Keratotic lesions on the lips of farmers who generally work really long hours in the fields; but the melanin pigmentation on the lips protects the malignant conversion in most cases
ENVIRONMENT SMOG
Many chemicals escape from industrial smokestacks and industries including suspected carcinogens. Benzene comes out in car exhaust. Factors those favors ozone buildup and lead to smog alerts may cause these chemicals to build up. In order to prevent yourself from pollution, avoid exercise near high traffic areas and on polluted days try to stay indoors mostly during smog alerts
LIFESTYLE DISORDER
Exercising daily for at least 30 minutes daily keeps weight in control, may reduce risk of several cancers, mostly colon and breast cancer and also helps in preventing heart disease, diabetes and bone loss
CHOOSING THE WRONG FOODS
Researchers have found out high levels of the carcinogen agents in French fries and potato chips. Try avoiding charred meat, limiting the consumption of red meat to reduce your risk of colon cancer. Cut down on the fatty fish like carp, catfish, bass, king mackerel etc. Always choose a well balanced diet rich in fiber like lentils and whole grains and low in fat along with fresh fruits and vegetables.

How to overcome dental anxiety

How to overcome dental anxiety
Have a visit due to your dentist that you have been avoiding for a long time? Is there a general sense of fear associated with that dental chair and the various sounds and noises it produces? Do not worry. You are not the only one. The idea of going to a dentist can cause as much anxiety as the pain that a decayed tooth may be causing. The responses are not age related. Different people could have different reactions dealing with dental anxiety. Some may be calm and composed and some may be total wrecks. A lot depends on the dentist and the environment he/ she creates for the patients. Understanding the patients and their levels of anxiety could be crucial in assessing their levels of anxiety and help them overcome it.
 Assessment of dental anxiety
There are numerous ways available to assess dental anxiety, both in children and adults. A five point scale that is reliable and quick to administer. It has cut-offs for mild, moderate, and phobic levels of anxiety.
Interventions for individuals with low levels of anxiety
For children attending with low levels of dental fear, approaches that can be adopted include:
  • Rapport building: like use of a magic trick. The use of magic trick increases cooperation when compared to no intervention or the use of tell-show-dotechnique.
  • Voice control: using loud voice with deep tone is more effective in reducing disruptive behavior of a child & interaction more pleasurable than the normal voice level
  • Distraction: there are number of ways which can be used for distraction such as: the use of video-taped cartoons, audio-taped stories and video games. Distraction techniques are equally effective as relaxation-based techniques, and superior to no intervention.
  • Modeling: modeling has been used extensively with children and is generally most effective if the observed child is similar in age, gender and level of dental anxiety to the child watching, if the child enters and leaves the surgery without adverse consequences.
  • Environmental change: three studies have sought to make the dental environment more attractive to children attending the dental surgery.
Approaches can be used in patients with low dental fear:
  • Enhancing the sense of control: One of the most commonly used techniques to do this is the stop signal.  In this patient can raise the hand and give signal to the dentist.
  • Cognitive distraction: the patient is encouraged to think about something other than the dental situation, be in  a happy place or think of a less stress causing situation.
  • Environmental change: soothing smell of lavender in dental waiting area to reduce the immediate fear of the patient but it will not reduce the underlying cognitive factor.
Interventions for individuals with moderate levels of anxiety
Patients with moderate levels of dental anxiety may benefit from the prior preparatory information.
  • Information about what will happen (procedural information)
  • Information about what sensations the individual will experience (sensory information)
  • Information about what the individual can do to cope with the situation (coping information).
Interventions for individuals with high levels of anxietyPharmacological management
This includes relative analgesia, conscious sedation and general anesthesia. These management techniques are not much used but there are ongoing needs for such services when patient is not regular to visit for treatment or to the point where they are in severe pain or with compromised oral health
Cognitive behavioural therapy
It is a synthesis of behaviour therapy and cognitive therapy and uses both behaviour modification techniques and cognitive restructuring procedures to change maladaptive beliefs and behaviours. Behavioural aspects of CBT include learning relaxation skills, conducting mini-experiments and systematic desensitization. An important principle underlying CBT is its focus on the 'here and now' as what started a problem is often not the same as what is keeping it going.
